NRA Instructor Certification

for Permit to Carry Certification, Click here

If you are interested in becoming a certified NRA instructor, you have come to the right place. NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Certification is a prerequisite for many multi-state permit to carry (CCW) credentials, including Florida and Utah. NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Certification will help you not only with the credentials you need, but also strengthen your own skills as a shooter and teacher.

Here's a brief, non-technical description of the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Certification Process.

1. You must first take the NRA Basic Pistol Course as a student. There are two options. One is an 8-hour classroom version and the other is a blended version where you do some of the coursework online before the class day. On class day, you will demonstrate what you've learned as well as perform the shooting qualification.

2. The second requirement is BIT (Basic Instructor Training). The BIT course lasts 6 hours and teaches you how to teach. BIT, by itself, will not give you any credentials, but is required for all NRA instructors.

3. The third requirement is to take the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Course. This course lasts 10 hours. During this course, you will be preparing and presenting to the other instructor candidates (and the Training Counselor) the lessons you will later teach to your students. Be prepared for a very hands-on teaching experience.

After this, you can add ratings (I offer ratings in Home Firearms Safety and NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home. If you are interested in other ratings, I can recommend a TC who offers them.) You only need to take BIT again (a) if you go to another TC and they require it or (b) if you wait more than 2 years to add a rating. If you successfully complete BIT and a rating, your credentials will be filed with the NRA and you will be able to begin teaching on your own.
